Thanks for getting back to me, i am willing to rent the apartment and
i am at sea at the moment as i am a Maritime and Coastguard
Agency(MCA) employee in USA but i am coming to study and work part
time down there but due to the nature of my work, phone calls making
and visiting of website are restricted. I only squeezed out time to
check this advert and send you an email regarding this apartment.
i am ready to rent it asap so tell me how much is the rent per month
and how much deposit do i have to pay.
After several strange emails, the scam begins:
I was just about to pay when i have this issue with the moving and
shipping company, the shipping company says i will need to pay for
the moving before they can ship my items, they charge me 480euro for
pick up and delivery, and payments for Mover agent will be made to
the corporate international headquarter in China. The payment is to be
made through western union money transfer. I will add 480euro to my
rent deposit that i will transfer to your paypal account which you
will help me to send to their corporate headquarters in China. I will
send the funds through paypal transfer and I will email you to let you
know when i am through with the payment. This can be done by visiting
western union office nearby, I will also include 100euro for the
western union money transfer commission . I would have done it myself
but i am not with enough cash here but i can transfer it from my
paypal account because it is attached to my bank account.....I will
appreciate your cooperation here.\"

I initially received a suspicious looking text message from this person in response to an ad I had placed while looking for a housemate. They were requesting that I email them on email@example.com to either tell them about myself or ask them anything regarding moving in. The layout of the text looked a little off to me so I ignored it at first. I received the exact same message again two days later and thought that I may as well email this person. I had already Googled the email address and nothing came up.
I received an email response that briefly explained that she was from Melbourne and was working in Canada as a Coast Guard Agency employee. The email contained an attachment that had a scanned Passport ID, a Medicare receipt and an Australia Post receipt for a certified copy of these documents for a lady named Tran Thi Kim Hoang. They were very persistent that I tell them how much I would like them to pay as they can start to pay rent immediately.
I told them that I would like to meet them before I agree to anything and that maybe we should pick this up once "she" is back in Australia. To this email, I received another response that was totally devoid of any reference to what I had just asked. This time they were asking for me to give them my PayPal email address so that they can pay now. They also asked for my home address so that they could organise for the movers to gather a cost of how much it would be to move "Kim's" belongings over.
I reminded "Kim" that we wanted to meet her before we go any further to which I received another response pushing for me to send my PayPal address as they needed to get the payment done. They stressed that it was important so that they can show their employers the payment receipt as proof as they were paying for the "fee".
It was at this point that I thought that it had to be a scam, I also noticed that the emails were coming from a different address to that which I had originally contacted. I googled this other email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) and found numerous warnings that this was a scam and even found that others had received the exact same text and initial email as I had.
I have since ceased contact with them after a "thanks, but no thanks" email.
