I posted an item for sale on OfferUp. Someone immediately responded saying they were interested and could I please email them at a personal email account. I realize this should have been my first clue and I will be more careful from here on out. Anyway, I did email them and they responded with the following email: "I am interested in buying the item from you so please i want you to
remove the item from sales list,i don't mind giving you extra $50 in
order to delete the advert,I will be pay in cash via certified bank
check or cashier check, you will deposit the check in your account when
get it receive, then get back to me to arrange for the pick up at your
place..I promise you everything will go smoothly as I would like to
have it before my wedding anniversary which comes in a week..I will
need the following details to mail out the payment as soon as possible
such as below info.:Full Name to be on the check, Your mailing address
& Apt #: City, State, Zip Code: Sex: Cell number is important:
acknowledge the text receipt !! I'll be looking forward to hear from
you and confirm the total asking price Plus the $50 I'm giving you for
deleting the advert..."
At this point it seemed very suspicious so I did an internet search and sure enough there were lots of people who reported similar stories of people willing to overpay. I'm not quite sure how the scam works exactly but it is in fact a scam and you should beware. An internet search saved me, I hope it can do the same for others.
