I saw an ad placed on sittercity.com by a Courtney S. searching for someone to take care of her ill sister who was coming to town. Naturally I thought that since the site required its sitters to undergo background checks and other security measures, it would do the same for its clients. I was wrong. After sending in an application I was met with this email:

Though it seemed suspicious I initially read it as a nervous parent or aunt wanting to be certain and secure. But then there was never any mention of wanting to see a resume, references, or credentials. The emails were too prompt, disorganized, and rushed. And then even though I had specifically asked to receive the check after meeting with the client in person, I received this email.

"Good Morning Allison

We deeply apologize for the delay to get you started. However the check is already mailed out and you will be receiving it soon, once you get the check your advised to deposit it at your BANK or ATM / MOBILE APP DEPOSIT for quick withdrawal today because my sister needs a place to lay her head when she comes by tomorrow so you can get started by this week when she arrives.

God Bless You"

I naturally researched the company and the transfer system and it lead me to this site and many like it stating this was inevitably a scam. But what really hammered the nail in the coffin, so to speak, was when I saw a fellow sittercity.com member/sitter had also posted about the same crime/scam but placed under the name of Stephanie Diaz. I am, however, yet to receive a check but fully intend on ripping it up upon receipt.

Avoid at all cost anyone who, not only prematurely sends you a check for services un-rendered but also requires you to transfer it to an unknown person or location. Any body looking for a care giver but does not think to interview them/insure their trustworthiness is most likely not trustworthy themselves.
